“Quiet had a roof and it had walls around it, and you could sit inside it. She had never thought of silence as a place. One of the friends, Tom Williams told her,’the place is in your heart, Louise. Everything else is just clutter.” – Lloyd Jones

Wells Gray Clearwater volcanic field

The Wells Gray – Clearwater Volcanic Field is a tight cluster of basaltic volcanoes, and includes the Quesnel Cone Group. The origin of this volcanism is not yet clear, but appears to be a result of local crustal thinning. Many of these eruptions occurred during periods of glaciation, so the eruptions interacted with the ice sheets in complex ways, forming distinctive volcanic forms.

“[The modern age] knows nothing about isolation and nothing about silence. In our quietest and loneliest hour the automatic ice-maker in the refrigerator will cluck and drop an ice cube, the automatic dishwasher will sigh through its changes, a plane will drone over, the nearest freeway will vibrate the air. Red and white lights will pass in the sky, lights will shine along highways and glance off windows. There is always a radio that can be turned to some all-night station, or a television set to turn artificial moonlight into the flickering images of the late show. We can put on a turntable whatever consolation we most respond to, Mozart or Copland or the Grateful Dead.” – Wallace Stegner

“Music is pleasing not only because of the sound but because of the silence that is in it: without the alternation of sound and silence there would be no rhythm.” – Thomas Merton
