The 30,760-acre Mount Tipton Wilderness is located in Mohave County, 25 miles north of Kingman, Arizona. This wilderness includes the entire northern half of the imposing Cerbat Mountains. Although Mount Tipton Peak, at 7,148 feet, dominates the wilderness, the true centerpiece and main scenic attraction here is the Cerbat Pinnacles. Located north of and below Mount Tipton, the Pinnacles, immense tusk-like rows of maroon-colored spires, stand majestically above open, tawny-colored valleys.

“Here’s something else to think about: calling when you say you’re going to is the very first brick in the house you are building of love and trust. If he can’t lay this one stupid brick down, you ain’t never gonna have a house baby, and it’s cold outside.” – Greg Behrendt

The 31,000-acre Mt. Tipton Wilderness lies in the Cerbat Mountains in northwestern Arizona. Desert scrub and cacti from the Mojave Desert floor transitions to pinyon pine, silk tassel, and live oak while chaparral claims the higher elevations. Gambel’s quail tracks spread like an indecipherable alphabet across the sand, while whiptail lizards share rocks and gravel washes with diamondback rattlesnakes. At dusk, a cougar slips along the rocky outcrops on silent paws in search of inattentive mule deer browsing below. It is a quiet place, the palpable desert silence stirred by dry breezes.

“Equality is not a concept. It’s not something we should be striving for. It’s a necessity. Equality is like gravity. We need it to stand on this earth as men and women, and the misogyny that is in every culture is not a true part of the human condition. It is life out of balance, and that imbalance is sucking something out of the soul of every man and woman who’s confronted with it. We need equality. Kinda now.” – Joss

The 40,000-acre Wabayuma Peak Wilderness in the Hualapai Mountains is a short drive from Kingman. The 7,601-foot Wabayuma Peak towers over this rocky wilderness, which plunges almost 5,000 feet in five miles to the desert floor. Sonoran and Mojave vegetations include the northernmost stands of saguaro cacti. Above the desert, chaparral and piñon-juniper woodlands thrive, as do ponderosa pine and Gambel oak. This is fine country for year-round backpacking and horse packing trips.

“The beginning of love is the will to let those we love be perfectly themselves, the resolution not to twist them to fit our own image. If in loving them we do not love what they are, but only their potential likeness to ourselves, then we do not love them: we only love the reflection of ourselves we find in them” – Thomas Merton
