“For me, trees have always been the most penetrating preachers. I revere them when they live in tribes and families, in forests and groves. And even more I revere them when they stand alone. They are like lonely persons. Not like hermits who have stolen away out of some weakness, but like great, solitary men, like Beethoven and Nietzsche. In their highest boughs the world rustles, their roots rest in infinity; but they do not lose themselves there, they struggle with all the force of their lives for one thing only: to fulfil themselves according to their own laws, to build up their own form, to represent themselves. Nothing is holier, nothing is more exemplary than a beautiful, strong tree. ” – Hermann Hesse

“Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life. ” – Hermann Hesse

Sometimes everything

has to be

enscribed across

the heavens

so you can find

the one line already written

inside you.

Sometimes it takes

a great sky

to find that

first, bright

and indescribable

wedge of freedom

in your own heart.

Great Grey Owl Hunting Minnesota Winter Raptor Bird of Prey Talons Beak Predator Gray Photo Photograph Print BY PurpleWoods Beautiful Fine Art Nature Photography

Late one night, I was walking home and enjoying the night sky

filled with stars and an occasional satellite floating by.

Suddenly I felt something shift.

I looked up and saw this incredible, wide wingspan fly over.

Absolute silence, there were no sounds.

What intense quiet and powerful movement,

not even the air shifted over my head.

Then I saw a huge owl landing on a wooden pole

in front of me and to the left.

British Columbia Stream by Tad McIlwraith

http://blogs.plos.org/neuroanthropology/2010/09/08/wednesday-round-up-119/

Water flows over and around rocks in a stream, rippling along. Very very slowly over a long period of time, some of those rocks eventually move, giving way to the water, which fills the hollows and continues to flow on its way.

We are both the water and the rocks at various times and situations.

Joy Reclaimed in Retreat……a Thanksgiving thought

November 18, 2011 § Leave a comment

Having lost life’s sparkle,

I walked

To the Moon Lodge – alone,

There to find some serenity

I could call up when the need arose,

I witnessed the miracle of reclamation,

As I counted my blessings once more,

My joy returned,

Overflowing,

As through the silence,

I bore witness

To the miracles

I had forgotten in my haste;

Tonight the moon burst!

……….Walks Tall Woman, the Clan Mother of the Eleventh Moon cycle, reminds us there is strength in retreat. Sometimes that strength can mean the difference in how we view our lives and the joy we are offered, if we make the time to receive….

Poem du Jour

Listening to the Whispers

Listening to the whispers

That come through time and space

The voices of the ancestors

Of every creed and race.

Our silent spirits are waiting;

Inspiration is our desire,

The spark of understanding

Will set our hearts on fire.

Within that fiery vision,

The whispers call our names,

Asking those who listen

To carry the eternal flame.

The flame is illumination

Of the love that lies within,

All creatures, Tribes and Nations

Become family once again.

Are we really listening

To the whispers all around?

The voices within the circle

Are calling for common ground.

Where peace is the message,

Where no child stands alone,

And no hearts are broken,

Because we’ve all come home.

– Jamie Sams in “Earth Medicine: Ancestors’ Ways of Harmony for Many Moons”.
